Amazing Ferrofluid Art

Ferrofluid is really neat.  It’s a liquid with magnetic nano-particles which gives it amazing magnetic properties.  It’s one of those cool scientific things that despite being used for boring everyday applications (mostly electromagnetic dampers), it will always be fun to look at and play with.  Just have a look at what artist Sachiko Kodama has been doing with the stuff - here are a few videos of her work.

Protrude, Flow

An older video of some early experimentation done while in pursuit of some type of interactive display  The goal was to ‘bring the fluid to life’.

Morpho Towers

A newer concept of bringing actual sculpture into the mix, letting the ferrofluid play off of metal spires which twist and bend the electromagnetic field.

Sachiko Kodama - When I met this material

This is a quick video about the artist and one of her sculptures.  It’s all magnificently simple, and goes to show that to make some really interesting art, sometimes all you need to do is just pick a new and cool medium that nobody else thought to use.

Not enough for you?

These guys at MIT did some cool experiment, and came up with some neat patterns.
